NATALIE J CARSON MSW, RSW
THERAPY

Welcome

My name is Natalie John-Carson MSW, RSW. I am a dedicated social worker with over 15 years' experience working in mental health with teens and their families. I am currently providing virtual care in the form of family and individual therapy for eating disorders and general mental health treatment. My approach is dedicated to inclusivity, anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice.

ABOUT ME

For the past 15 years I have been working primarily in the field of pediatric eating disorders. I am also trained in treating mood disorders using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills (DBT) for teens who struggle with self-injurious behaviours and suicidal thoughts. My passion is working with adolescents and their families. I fully appreciate the stress and strain an eating disorder and a general mental health diagnosis can have on a family as a whole. Parents often feel disempowered or ineffective in their efforts to support their child. I have a strong belief that parents are the key to their child's wellness. I believe with a non-judgmental approach, education, and empowerment parents can be the best support for their child.

Family Based Treatment for Eating Disorders (FBT)

FBT also known as the Maudsley Method is a prescribed treatment approach which requires specialty training. It is considered a first line and a leading treatment approach for children, adolescents, and some young adults with eating disorders. This treatment method involves treating the family as a whole and looks to parents as being experts on their child and an essential part of the recovery.

Individual Therapy

For various reasons an FBT approach may not be a good fit for your family. This is something we can assess together and alternative treatment options are available. This could include individual therapy or working exclusively with parents.

Consultation/Supervision

As a professional we often require support from one another. I am available to provide supervision to other therapists in the field who are treating eating disorders.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

If you struggle with disordered eating or have a diagnosed eating disorder a registered dietician can be helpful part of your care team. It is important to see a registered dietician who has expertise in treating eating disorders. Click the link for resources.

For more information on FBT and literature on treatment.

For help finding additional providers, helping your child and general information on eating disorders.

DBT skills can be a helpful adjunct to eating disorder treatment. If you are struggling with prolonged issues with emotional dysregulation and the crises in your life extend beyond eating disorder related issues, individual DBT might be a better treatment targeted at these issues.
